Commissioner Lesley Briones and the Harris County LGBTQIA+ Commission are proud to announce the release of the Commission’s inaugural report, presenting the needs, challenges, and recommendations regarding the LGBTQIA+ community across Harris County.
Established in June 2023 under Commissioner Briones’ leadership, the Commission provides actionable guidance to the Harris County Commissioners Court on policies and initiatives to better serve LGBTQIA+ residents and to promote equality in Harris County.
The report highlights the Commission’s foundational work over the past year, including a series of community listening sessions at which LGBTQIA+ residents and allies voiced concerns on issues like safety, access to mental health resources, representation, and support for LGBTQIA+ youth encountering hostility. These sessions shaped the report’s findings and recommendations.
"This inaugural report reflects the resilience of Harris County’s LGBTQIA+ community and the Commission members who have brought this vision to life,” said Commissioner Briones. “This report is not only a testament to amplifying LGBTQIA+ voices but also is a call to action for all of us to continue building a County where everyone can thrive. Harris County rejects hate and discrimination and is committed to building a more just, equal, inclusive community for all. I look forward to our continued partnership with the Commission as we take action to advance justice."
Key initiatives outlined for the upcoming year include a large-scale town hall, expanded partnerships with law enforcement to boost cultural competency, and targeted health initiatives. The report also proposes several policy recommendations, including:
Enhancing local data collection through a quality-of-life survey of LGBTQIA+ residents.
Serving as a forma LGBTQIA+ advisory body for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and other departments in need of inclusive policies and strategies.
Introducing consistent LGBTQIA+ awareness and cultural competency training for Harris County law enforcement agencies.
Developing a pipeline of qualified LGBTQIA+ residents for County boards and commissions.
Investing in LGBTQIA+ educational resources at County community centers.
"Harris County has made such important progress for LGBTQIA+ people over the past few years and this commission is history-making and gives our community a voice we have never had before,” said Brad Pritchett, LGBTQIA+ Commission Chair. “It is our hope that the work of the LGBTQIA+ Commission will help inform how the county can uplift and support its LGBTQIA+ constituents in truly meaningful ways."
The Harris County LGBTQIA+ Commission continues to welcome community involvement and input as it forges ahead with its mission to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents.
