No-Mow, Reduced-Mow Pilot Program

In June 2024, Precinct 4 launched a “Grow Zone” pilot program at John Paul Landing, George Bush Park, and Bear Creek Pioneers’ Park to reduce the negative impacts associated with frequent mowing by implementing conservation-minded management practices. This initiative exemplifies Precinct 4's commitment to sustainability and is part of a broader goal to implement environmentally friendly practices within our parks.

Goals

- Increase Biodiversity: Support the restoration of native vegetation to provide healthy habitats for pollinators and wildlife.
- Reduce Maintenance Costs: Mowing will be reduced in low-traffic areas, helping save resources.
- Cut Emissions: Decreased mowing will reduce carbon emissions from maintenance equipment.
- Enhance Environmental Benefits: Native vegetation, with its deeper roots, improves erosion control, mitigates flooding, and helps lower surface temperatures.
- Environmental Stewardship: Foster appreciation towards local natural resources & inspire park users to adopt sustainable practices at home.
