On October 20th, approximately 150,000 people across the greater Harris County area will celebrate Diwali. This year marks only the second time that residents will be able to buy fireworks ahead of the holiday — a core part of the festivities.
In 2023, the Texas Legislature passed HB 608, allowing Harris County Commissioners Court to vote on allowing fireworks sales ahead of Diwali. In September 2024, Commissioner Lesley Briones spearheaded the approval of fireworks sales, allowing residents to fully — and safely — celebrate the holiday.
What is Diwali?
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is a five-day festival, largely observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, that celebrates light over darkness or good over evil. The history of Diwali differs based on religion, region, and community. Core themes often include triumphing over demons, gaining enlightenment, and freedom.
How do people celebrate Diwali?
Each of the five days of Diwali marks a different celebration. Depending on the day, observers will purchase gold or silver jewelry or other items for good luck, make sweets, buy gifts, and clean their homes.
Since the holiday honors the triumph of light, lamps and firework displays are central to the festivities.
How does the burn ban affect Diwali celebrations this year?
On October 16th, Commissioners Court approved a 90-day burn ban for unincorporated areas of Harris County, which took effect immediately. The action follows other burn bans in Fort Bend, Montgomery, Waller, and other Counties, and limits the sale of fireworks. But Diwali celebrations will not be majorly impacted.
The ban includes only fireworks with sticks or fins, which are large-scale, long-range fireworks used in large displays. The public is still allowed to buy small-scale fireworks and sparklers, which are more commonly used during Diwali celebrations.
If you plan to use permitted fireworks during Diwali, remember that while they are legal in Harris County, they are prohibited in the City of Houston. If you choose to use fireworks, read the caution labels carefully, have a water source available for emergencies, and soak used fireworks thoroughly before disposing of them in the trash. Where can I go to celebrate Diwali?
If residents want to celebrate Diwali, there is no shortage of events. The Asia Society of Texas is hosting Diwali Lights! on Sunday, October 26th, and will offer food, activities, and a Ramayana performance. On the day of Diwali, October 20th, ISKCON Houston is celebrating through a traditional temple service. And, finally, HEB is bringing Diwali to Memorial Park on October 25th with live music and performances.
