Bayland Park will become Sharpstown’s center for accessible outdoor fun

Bayland Park sits in the heart of Sharpstown in Precinct 4. Thousands of people visit the park each year to walk the trails, play sports, and attend one of the many events held there.

Since Bayland opened in the 1950s, it has been a hub for youth sports. Today, it’s home to a dozen baseball fields, two soccer pitches, four tennis courts, and a football field. While the Sharpstown area has grown substantially since the 50s, Bayland Park has never been renovated. That’s why Commissioner Lesley Briones made transforming Bayland Park a priority.

To put residents’ voices at the center of the project, Precinct 4 began hosting community workshops in 2023, the same year Commissioner Briones entered office. Over the course of more than a year, the team gathered nearly 20,000 data points from thousands of community members.

Using the data and ideas from the community, Precinct 4 created the Bayland Park Master Plan. The plan envisions an active, connected, and resilient park for all. Here are six key upgrades included in the plan:

This plan transforms one of the main draws of Bayland: its sports fields. This plan includes eight new baseball and softball fields, four upgraded tennis courts, two new pickleball courts, an improved football stadium, and a brand-new basketball court. Some of these fields will also serve as flood detention areas during heavy rains.

Stormwater detention pond

Bayland is one of the few large greenspaces within the Sharpstown and Gulfton areas, making it a perfect area to add flood detention. The plan will add a large detention pond through the middle of the park with nature viewing culverts and vegetated islands to create a resilient and beautiful space for visitors to enjoy.

Expanding pedestrian pathways

Currently, Bayland Park has only 0.5 miles of pedestrian pathways. The proposed design would add an additional three miles of 10-foot-wide shared use trails.

Five all-abilities play areas

Accessibility is at the forefront of the transformed Bayland Park. The new plan would add five new accessible play areas across the park, so all children have spaces where they can have fun.

A new pedestrian promenade will wrap around the front of Bayland Park along Bissonnet Street and Hillcroft Avenue to create additional space for events, pop-up markets, and parking.

Dog park

Sharpstown residents have few areas where they can let their dogs run and play off leash. The proposed plan adds a brand-new dog park to the northwest corner of Bayland Park.

This plan is just the beginning, and your ideas and voice remain essential. Precinct 4 invites you and your neighbors to review the plan and share feedback to help shape the future of Bayland Park. Click here to view the full report.
