Commissioner Briones’ measure to allow the sale of fireworks for Diwali, in partnership with community organizations and the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office, passed with 4 votes. The Diwali fireworks season will include a public safety educational initiative and will be subject to Commissioners Court’s annual authorization.
Fireworks are a traditional component of recognizing Diwali, the Festival of Lights, a holiday celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. Diwali is celebrated by over one billion people worldwide.
“By allowing the sale of fireworks during this time, we are preserving cultural customs that bring families together and making it easier for people to celebrate safely, without the need to store fireworks throughout the year. I deeply appreciate the partnership of Fire Marshal Laurie Christensen and Executive Assistant Chief Rodney Reed in ensuring the safety of our residents,” said Commissioner Briones. “I have the privilege of representing a significant concentration of individuals who celebrate Diwali in Texas, and this measure is another step toward making Harris County even more inclusive and respectful of all families”.
For Diwali, fireworks sales will begin in Harris County on October 25 and will run through November 1, the final day of the holiday. In 2023, the Texas legislature passed HB 608 to allow for expanded fireworks sales during Diwali, with approval from Commissioners Court.
