‘More Than a Park,’ Burnett Bayland Slated for Upgrades and Improvements

10 Jan, 25

Burnett Bayland Park has remained a destination for sports tournaments, outdoor activities, and community for Gulfton-area residents for decades.

Now, through Precinct 4’s newly released plan for the park, Burnett Bayland Park will undergo a major transformation that will introduce new best-in-class amenities like a food truck park and lush landscaping and greenspaces.

The reimagined park will go beyond just serving as a place for recreation: it will improve the quality of life for every resident, family, and visitor.

The Burnett Bayland Park master plan is a transformative initiative that will anchor inclusive revitalization in Gulfton for decades to come with investments in greenspace, play, services, and affordable housing,” Luis Guajardo, AICP, Precinct 4’s Director of Planning & Community Development said.

It’s more than a park it is the heart of Gulfton and the neighborhood’s shared front yard. The plan introduces swift action on years of community interest in having this vital public space re-imagined.”

Here are the five key upgrades included in the master plan:

1. A Safer and More Accessible Park for All

Community safety is at the forefront of the new and improved Burnett Bayland Park. Upgrades such as safer pedestrian crossings, wide, well-lit trails, and multiple entry points will make it easier for families, older adults, and individuals with mobility needs to enjoy the park’s vibrant atmosphere.

2. Nature and Sustainability at the Forefront

Gulfton residents who flock to the park to escape the city’s heat can expect to enter a green oasis. Planting more native trees and expanding shaded areas will create cooler, more comfortable spaces for everyone during the city’s hottest seasons. In addition, innovative features like rain gardens will enhance the park’s environmental resilience and help address the area's flooding challenges.

3. New Amenities for Families and Events

Burnett Bayland Park has always been the site of family picnics and outings, cultural celebrations, and community events. The additions of an inclusive playground, splash pad, and multipurpose event lawn will elevate these experiences and create endless possibilities for community connectivity.

4. Upgraded Recreational Facilities

From youth soccer tournaments to weekend basketball games, sports are central to the Gulfton community’s identity. Burnett Bayland Park’s well-loved soccer fields and sports courts will receive a facelift while new options, such as pickleball courts, will be created.

5. Economic and Social Connection

Burnett Bayland Park is the backdrop for countless neighborhood traditions with its farmers markets and food truck gatherings. The Gulfton community’s legacy will live on through a new community center, designated food truck areas, and a permanent farmers market space. Conveniently located near the planned METRO Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station, the park will become an even more accessible place for residents to connect, support local businesses, and create lasting memories.

This plan is just the beginning, and the community’s voice remains essential. Precinct 4 invites residents to review the plan and share feedback to help shape the future of Burnett Bayland Park. Click here to view the full report.
